The Samsung Epic Touch 4G running on Sprint’s 4G WiMAX wireless network was recently named Best New Mobile Device at 4G World 2011, the world’s largest 4G-dedicated Conference and Expo, held in Chicago. Samsung was also awarded a tie for second place in that category, with their T-Mobile Galaxy S and AT&T Galaxy S II being honored. Dale Sohn, Samsung president, said that the company was honored and humbled by the awards. As if that was not enough for the smartphone manufacturer who just recently passed Apple as the biggest shipper of smartphones globally, Samsung was recently awarded Phone of the Year at this year’s T3 technology Expo, the first year in the last four years that an Apple iPhone did not take down that honor.
The Epic Touch 4G is the first Galaxy S II US version, and was launched on the heels of the five-month opening in Europe and Asia that saw 10 million units sold. Sprint had Samsung make some changes to the handset so that it would not look exactly like the one launched overseas, and to that effect the Epic Touch 4G delivers the largest display in smartphone technology, at 4.52 inches. That is a multi-capacitive touchscreen, and supports 16 million color representation and 480 x 800 pixels. Samsung uses their own Super AMOLED Plus display technology on the handset, and standard light and proximity sensors are built in.
