Yusuf Muhammad, Plumis
When Yusuf Muhammad embarked on his masters course in Innovation Design
Engineering at the Royal College of Art, he imagined he might end up working
in a product consultancy or pursuing his passion for designing basketball
shoes.
Instead, Muhammad, who had no business experience, is now director of a
successful company selling a fire- suppression device that he co-designed
during his degree.
The product, Automist, is a water-mist spray built into kitchen taps, with a
heat-detection system that automatically triggers in the event of a fire.
"When we came up with the idea for Automist everyone said, 'This has got
potential'," Muhammad says. "I was really keen not to have my work
just stay in a portfolio if it could be out there making a difference."
Soon after graduating, he formed the company Plumis to take Automist to
market, working alongside two other directors, both of whom have MBAs,
allowing Muhammad to concentrate on design.
